The Local Journalism Initiative was launched by theGovernment of Canada to support the creation of original civic journalismthat covers the diverse needs of underserved communities across Canada.The National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada (NEPMCC) is one ofseven not–for–profit organizations that administers the Initiative.

If you are an Ethnic Media Outlet (writtenpress, community radio, community television and online newsservice) you may be eligible to receive funding from The LocalJournalism Initiative and you will be able to hire journalists to strengthenlocal coverage of civic matters in underserved communities.

NEPMCC is available to provide support and financialassistance to qualifying candidates.

The National Ethnic Press and Media Council ofCanada is a non–profit organization established in 1958(formerly Canada Ethnic Press Federation) whose mission is to promote andintegrate the economic, social and cultural interests of ethniccommunities into the mainstream of Canadian Society. We are 850 Canadian media outlets available in more than 111languages that serve new Canadians and help them tointegrate into their new Canadian Culture.

Once the application is received, along with necessarydocumentation: this includes copies of your printed newspaper and for onlineoutlets, we require analytics that span 12 months. The statistics must show acountry breakdown of where your viewers live. This is for the committee toconfirm that a majority of your readership is within Canada. Every thirdlanguage community is unique and we assess all applications on an individualbasis.

A 3 member committee will assess all applications. This includesThe Hon. Joe Volpe, Dr. Mohammad Tajdolati and Maria Saras-Voutsinas. We mayalso call upon members within your linguistic community to help us determinethe content in your outlet and in your third language. We understand thatcommunity relations are sensitive and we will discuss this with you before webring in an expert.

The journalist involved in the program must submit and publish atleast three to five articles pertaining to federal, provincial and municipaldevelopments. Your LJI reporter must be clearly identified as the author of thearticles (journalist name, LJI Reporter). They must also be identified on yourmasthead as a LJI Reporter.  Onceaccepted into the program, the outlet must acknowledge that all LJI articlesare funded via the Government of Canada. “Reporter Name is funded by theGovernment of Canada through the Local Journalism Initiative program”. The LJIjournalist must be identified with each article as follows: ReporterName, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter. Copies of these articles must also beforwarded to NEPMCC to be placed on our web site. The publisher orEditor-In-Chief also confirms that the journalist will be visiting localcommunities that they serve and prepare articles about the work and life of themembers of the community. The NEPMCC will supply the necessary pre-paid boxesfor mail through Canada Post. Necessary equipment for the work of theJournalist will be supplied by the NEPMCC upon request. Every publicationassociated with the program must contain at least 50 % Canadian editorialcontent in order to qualify for the program. Our complaint process can be found within our guidelines. You can email our President at saras@patrides.com. At thattime, we will involve our Ombudsman and select a committee to assess thedispute. This will include a member from within your third language communityand 2 other members of our Board.
